Insurance Tips After A Disaster

  • Damage to a home from fallen trees is usually covered.
  • Most policies will pay to have trees removed from structures but not from the yard.
  • Most policies cover damages to appliances from a power surge when power is restored to a home.
  • Damages to parked vehicles from fallen trees are covered under most automobile insurance policies.
  • Adjusters are required to properly identify themselves.

  • Adjusters are not allowed to personally buy salvage from claimants.

  • Adjusters are not permitted to accept gratuities.

  • Claimants are not required to use the contractor the insurance company might recommend.

  • The Consumer Services Division of the Department of Insurance is available to assist claimants with coverage questions at 1-800-546-5664.
